| Plotting The Right Course.
At Anchors we follow the early year’s
curriculum as set out in the foundation stage by OFSTED.
This means providing a range of planned, well resourced
activities for each child, thus allowing them to develop
within the six areas of learning. Examples of activities
in each area are set out below. A full list can be found
in our Anchors Nursery Handbook.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
At Anchors we focus on developing all
aspects of children’s personal, social and emotional
development, which is fundamental to all other areas of
their learning.
• To settle happily and manage without parent/carer
• To play independently and participate in a range
of activities
• To gain confidence and self respect
• To make friends

Communication, Language and Literacy
At Anchors we give each child the opportunity
and support to develop their communication, language and
literacy skills. Speaking, listening, reading and writing
for different purposes are the main areas of focus.
• To develop correct use of language
• To enjoy and respect books
• To develop hand co-ordination and progress to holding
a pencil correctly and forming recognisable letters.

Mathematical Development
At Anchors we prepare each child’s
key skills in order to further their mathematical development.
These include matching, sorting, counting, sequencing patterns,
shape, space and measurement.
• To identify patterns and sequences
• To begin to explore ways of solving practical problems
• To identify regular and irregular
shapes
• To count by rote and objects up to 20
• To recognise that maths is all around us

Knowledge and understanding of the world.
At Anchors we endeavour to develop in
the children an awareness of themselves, their families,
their environment and the world around them.
• To develop an interest in their
immediate environment
• To develop curiosity-why?, when?, how?, where?
• To explore and experiment with a range of tools
and materials
• To experience ICT
• To be introduced to a range of different cultures
and beliefs

Physical Development
At Anchors we provide opportunities for
each child to develop physically, concentrating particularly
on their fine and gross motor skills.
• To develop confidence and control when moving
• To develop balance and co-ordination
• To begin to recognise the importance of keeping
healthy and the effects of activities on their bodies


Creative development
At Anchors we cover a wide range of creative
development activities including art, music, role-play,
creative dance and imaginative play.
• To develop self expression
through art and craft media
• To develop self expression through music and movement
• To develop imagination
• To communicate their ideas and feelings through
role play
